Pre-Production Metal Acetates are normally created by mastering labs or in the recording studio and given to the artist or band members themselves, or kept by the record company prior to review before it is in final release. Normally, to save money, the lacquer  is melted off the metal core and the core can be reused. It's amazing when they survive because they are one or two steps removed from the recording session and the sound is normally amazing. They are for the most part strictly for test listening and collecting because, the coating is so soft, repeated playing will destroy it over time. When you think of the value of collectible items where there are only a few made (My thoughts go to the Rolling Stones Picture Sleeve of Street Fighting Man that sold for $18,000 at auction recently and is believed to only have 20 known copies in the market), the value is to a sellers market. Acetates and Metal Test Pressings from collectible artists seem to sell from $10,000 up to as much as $25,000 in the last few years and that was for artist like the Velvet Underground, The Sex Pistols, and the Beatles.
